Mobile television - Television on the mobile hand set
One of the promising new business opportunities of terrestrial digital television broadcasting lies in the DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) technology broadcasting up to 15-20 live television programmes that can be viewed on mobile phone handsets, based on the DVB-T compatible standard introduced in several countries already. According to the industry’s and regulators’ expectations the DVB-H standard will be the mobile television technology to spread across Europe, which will combine broadcasting technology with mobile technology suitable for providing interactive services, offering a new type of television viewing experience for viewers as well as satisfying a variety of types of consumer requirements.
DVB-H enables viewers to watch live television programmes on their mobile handsets, to use interactive services such as voting, to query files of a variety of types of contents etc.
For broadcasters the service offers new opportunities to reach new categories of audience, since watching TV is no longer a stationary activity. One can watch the next part of one’s favourable serial or the latest news, sports events or weather reports on the move. Content providers as well as mobile service providers will likewise have new market opportunities enabled by the DVB-H technology, to increase the number of their viewers or subscribers, as well as their revenuers.
Mobile television experiments are underway in almost all European countries.
