Duna TV and Duna II Autonómia programs join the MinDig TV digital terrestrial television serviceThursday, 27 November 2008

Duna TV joins first the MinDig TV digital terrestrial television service, the Duna TV program in HD format, the additional new terrestrial program, Duna II Autonómia will be available in SD format.

Today Antenna Hungária Group and Duna Television signed the 12-year, long-term contract about the participation on the MinDig TV digital terrestrial platform, the programs of Duna Television will be readily available in the digital terrestrial television service accessible free of charge to the Hungarian public as of December 1, 2008.

Duna TV joins first the service, the Duna TV program in HD - High Definition - format, the additional new terrestrial program, Duna II Autonómia will be available in SD – Standard Definition - format. Both programs will be placed on the same multiplex.

The MinDig TV service will be launched on December 1 from the Budapest, Kabhegy and Szentes transmitter stations, with circa 60% coverage of the Hungarian households. To join the service as a viewer, a wideband rooftop antenna in good condition, and a DVB-T MPEG-4 HD set-top-box or an integrated television set (IDTV) equipped with a DVB-T MPEG-4 HD tuner are needed.

Set-top-boxes and integrated television sets with MinDig TV sticker will be available for sale in retail stores from December. The sticker guarantees, that the equipment is suitable for the reception of digital terrestrial television signals. The cooperation between the two companies shall also be extended to the communications activities, Duna TV will participate as a strategic partner related to the communication of the digital switchover.

Duna Television, a Hungarian public television channel was launched on December 24, 1992. The program is available via satellite reception at the beginning it was available only in Europe but since Christmas of 2004 it became available in North America and Australia, from 2007 in South America as well. In Europe it is transmitted from Hot Bird 3 and Hot Bird 6, in North America from Galaxy 25, in Sourt America from NSS-806, in Australia and New Zealand from the Optus B3 satellites, outside Europe in an encrypted, subscription based format. In Hungary it is included in the program package of every cable service provider. Several programs of the channel are available in stream video format on the internet from its website. Its operation is regulated by the Act I. 1996 (i.e. Media Law). Its owner is the Hungária Television Public Foundation and the operation is supported by many other foundations as well. One important task of Duna TV is to provide programs for the Hungarian origin people living outside Hungary in their mother tongue. Its activity was honoured by the “Hungarian Heritage Award” and by the UNESCO Prix Camera in 1999, according to the latter ’Duna TV is the best cultural television of the world’. The channel won the Public Award of the Eutelsat-Hot Bird satellite competition in 2006 and 2008. The new channel, Duna II Autonómia started its operation from the Easter of 2006.
